“Thin blue line” is usually a phrase used to express solidarity with law enforcement agencies in the United States. It generally refers to the line separating order from anarchy that is supposedly enforced by the police. A visual representation of the phrase is often seen in black and white flags that have a thick horizontal blue stripe running through the middle.
Made in response to the increasing visibility of police violence and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, this work shows a thin blue line tearing haphazardly across the flag. The uncertain trajectory of the thin blue line in this work calls into question the confused authority of law enforcement in society and plays on the controversies surrounding corruption and misuse of power.
